Have you ever wished you could save an error message so you could send it to your IT guy? (if you don’t already have an IT or computer guy, I know a guy that can help you out…) Do you try to right down the technical mumbo jumbo or take a picture with your phone? Well I have good news, there are several ways to take a screen shot of anything on your screen. I will cover two ways how to take screenshots in Windows in this post. One method you can do right now without any special software. The second way requires a piece of free software that is very easy to use, and is the method I would recommend.

Option 1:

  1. Click on the error or Windows you want to capture
  2. Press Alt + PrtScn (Print Screen)
    • How to take screenshots in Windows
  3. Click on your start button and start typing “paint”
  4. Click on “Paint”
    • How to take screenshots in Windows
  5. Press Ctrl + V
    • How to take screenshots in Windows
  6. Click on File in the upper left and select Save As -> JPEG picture
    • How to take screenshots in Windows
  7. Select were you want to save your image and give it a name, then click on “Save”
  8. Now you can send the file to anyone

Option 2 (preferred):

  1. Download and install Skitch – Download it here
    • Skitch is a free tool for Windows provided by Evernote
  2. Startup Skitch
  3. Click on “screen snap” at the top
    • How to take screenshots in Windows
  4. Draw a box around the area you want to capture
  5. Press Ctrl+Shift+S
    • How to take screenshots in Windows
  6. Select were to save the image and give it name
    • I also recommend changing the file type to JPEG
  7. Now you can send that file to anyone
